The Los Alamos Beer Cooperative successfully completed a crowdfunding project Dec. 25 that raised more than $2,000 through MainStreetCrowd. The Beer Co-op is moving forward in establishing a brewery and taproom for the community to gather and enjoy great, locally handcrafted beer. The money generated through MainStreetCrowd will go toward purchasing brewery equipment.
The Beer Co-op will be the first ever brewery in Los Alamos, and the first Cooperative brewery in the state of New Mexico. Currently, Black Star Co-op in Austin, Texas is the world’s first cooperatively-owned brewery. The Los Alamos Beer Cooperative intends to be the second.
The LABC is owned by it’s members who will have a say in how the brewery and taproom is operated. Profits from successful operation will be shared by the members of the co-op through dividends – a program many may be familiar with from another successful cooperative venture: REI.
The vision is to open a brewery that is run for and by beer lovers in Los Alamos and the surrounding area. The co-op format does just that by allowing the owners of the LABC to be a part of developing and guiding the future of the brewery.
The LABC is in the process of securing a location in Los Alamos and plans to hire a professional brewmaster to craft first-class beers that reflect the flavors of the region and the tastes of the membership.
