SPORTS News:

The Los Alamos Aquatomics hosted their Winter Open Meet this weekend at Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center. The event saw 246 swimmers from teams as far away as Carlsbad.

The Aquatomics had 52 participants, and posted some impressive swims.

High-point winners for the Aquatomics were: Allison Amrani (2nd 8&U girls), Emily McLaughlin (3rd  8&U girls), Andy Corliss (2nd 9-10 boys), Beth Short (3rd  11-12 girls), Ian Jaegers (1st 11-12 boys), Alana Goodwin (2nd 13-14 girls), Kaitlin Bennett and Jesse Liechty (tied for 1st 15-18 girls), Niamh Short (3rd 15-18 girls) and Alex Jaegers (1st 15-18 boys).

In addition to the high-point trophy recipients, the team saw great improvements with many swimmers making NM State qualifying standards. Among those were: Sophia Pieck (age 8), Savannah Kimball (9), Ava Pietryga (9), Sylvia Holesinger (10), Ming Lo (9), Nikolai Nelson (9), Ryan Aldaz (10), Andy Corliss (10), Sam Katko (10), Avery Hinckley (10), Tristan Macdonald (10), Connor Tepley (10), Wayne Williams (10), Kalen Melton (11), Beth Short (12) Olivia Tepley (12), Max Corliss (12), Ian Jaegers (12), Gabe Katko (12), Jillian Bennett (14), Alana Goodwin (14), Sonyia Williams (14), Niamh Short (15), Jesse Liechty (15), Kaitlin Bennett (15) and Alex Jaegers (16).

Head Coach, Olympic Gold-Medalist John Murphy commented on the team’s performance, “I think the team as a whole swam really well. We came through a tough fall with the pool closure, and still had swimmers improve in their events. We fielded up to 11 relay teams in a Medley relay event this weekend, and showed a lot of home-town spirit. We have many more swimmers who narrowly missed qualifying for the State Meet, so our prospects as a team are excellent going into the final month of the season.”

The New Mexico State 10 & Under meet is Feb. 28-March 1 in Albuquerque. The New Mexico State 11 & Over meet is March 5-8 in Farmington.
