SPORTS News:

In tennis matches played Saturday at Urban Park, the Los Alamos 3.5 Men’s USTA 18-and over tennis team defeated a team from the El Gancho Fitness Swim and Racquet Club by a score of 5-0.

The result puts the Los Alamos team on top of the standings with a 11-1 record. Matches this weekend complete the round-robin play in the Northern New Mexico District of the US Tennis Association Southwest Section.

Because no team went undefeated in the district, playoffs to represent the Northern New Mexico District in the upcoming sectional matches will be held on the weekend of June 2 and 3 at the Jerry Cline Tennis Facility in Albuquerque. By virtue of finishing first in the District, the Los Alamos team will play the winner of a match between the second and third place teams, which will be held on June 2. Los Alamos will then play the winner of this match on June 3 to determine the District’s representative to the Southwest sectional playoffs.

Individual results are as follows.  In number one singles, Xianzhu Tang defeated his opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. The El Gancho team defaulted the number 2 singles. In number one doubles the Los Alamos team of Kaarthik Sundar and KwanSoo Lee defeated their opponents by the score of 6-1, 6-3.  At number two doubles, Bob Benjamin and Donald Dry won by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Finally in a marathon at number three doubles, in a closely fought match that went to a 10-point tie-breaker, Chang Kim and Cihan Akcay defeated the El Gancho team 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
