Los Alamos County Chief Building Official Michael Arellano and Fire Marshall Jeffrey Wetteland red-tagged buildings Tuesday on Longview Drive in White Rock citing unsafe conditions. The walkways around the outside of the buildings have been taped off and red warning signs posted on all the doorways.

Arellano told the Los Alamos Daily Post late Tuesday afternoon that he is afraid the columns around the buildings are going to fall. He also voiced concern about the structural stability of the roofs. The buildings can’t be occupied until entry can be made and the structures examined and certified as safe by a structural engineer.

The property is owned by Larry E. Handy who also owns Hot Hole Industries, a longtime surveying wells business in the oil and gas extraction sector, with the exception of one buliding in the complex owned by the Los Alamos Housing Partnership, which purchased is at a foreclosure sale.

The Housing Partnership is a non-profit corporation established in 1994 as a mechanism to help Los Alamos County implement various housing programs and projects. The organization’s executive director was unavailable Wednesday for comment.

Local Realtor James Chrobocinski had previously listed the complex.

“I attempted to facilitate the sale of the property with various entities over the last couple of years but was not able to find a buyer,” Chrobocinski said.
