COMMUNITY News:
Sienna Granillo, 10, Kyle Granillo, 9, Alex Byerly, 8, and Hannah Granillo, 6, of White Rock recently represented the La Vista Church of the Nazarene in White Rock at the District level of the New Mexico Children’s Bible Quizzing. The quiz meet took place Saturday, March 4 in Albuquerque.
The children competed against 40-50 other participants from all around New Mexico. Questions were drawn from 1 and 2 Samuel, as well as numerous Psalm verses that had to be memorized. All four of the La Vista Church children practiced together twice a week as well as studied at home. They were coached by Cindy Byerly and Katrina Granillo.
Alex and Kyle tied for Quizzer of the Year in their age bracket. Sienna was named Quizzer of the Year in her age bracket. This award is given based on cumulative points throughout the quizzing season.
Sienna was one of five children from the state who were chosen to compete, as a team, May 13 at the regional level in San Diego, Calif. There, they will compete with teams that represent 11 other districts in the Southwest United States.
Sienna, Kyle and Alex all qualified to compete June 24 at the World Quiz. Alex and Kyle will both compete at the Red Level (ages 5-9), and Sienna will compete at the Blue Level (ages 10-12). The World Quiz will be held in Indianapolis, Ind., and will include qualifying children from all over the world. The world quiz is held once every four years.
According to the official website for the Church of the Nazarene, “The philosophy of Children’s Quizzing is Bible study. It is important to help children know what the Bible says and help them demonstrate biblical teachings in actual life situations. The goal of Children’s Quizzing is for children to know the God of the Bible.” For more information, visit http://nazarene.org/ministries/ssm/children/programs/quiz/display.html.
