COMMUNITY News:
Deciding when to reboot “Live in Los Alamos” concerts has been a worrisome experience for organizer Jonathan Lathrop, Ted Galvez and those who help program the music series that has existed since 2015.
The nonprofit’s mission has always been to “promote musicians and community”, but the uncertainty of the pandemic brought significant challenges to continuing that mission and forced a hiatus after Abby Gardner enthralled a packed crowd in March 2020 at Fuller Lodge.
The uncertainty of health orders, COVID’s evolution and community comfort levels left Lathrop reluctant to sign on when local favorite Max Gomez’s team asked if the town was ready to support what has become Gomez’s annual holiday tour of northern New Mexico.
However, community response to the announcement that the show will occur 7:30 p.m. Jan. 2 at Fuller Lodge proves that Los Alamos is craving these opportunities. (Doors open at 7 p.m.)
The show, which is billed as “Max Gomez and Friends”, will feature Gomez, a Taos native, country music artist Leslie Stephens and a collection of New Mexico’s finest musicians.
“I wish we had a midsize venue to be able to make this show available to more of our community,” Lathrop said. “This will be the fourth time this show has sold out, and this one promises to sell out earlier than any show we have promoted. We hate to turn people away but are limited by the space at Fuller Lodge. Next year we will likely host the holiday show at Smith Auditorium and try to keep the rest of our shows in the more intimate space that Fuller offers.”
Live in Los Alamos has elected not to offer a dinner option for the show, which was something that many regular attendees of past shows have come to appreciate. Dipping their toes into promoting concerts during a pandemic means trying to minimize risk and keep attendees and artists healthy. While there will be no dining, Bathtub Row will serve beer and wine.
Note: All guests will be asked to provide proof of vaccination and wear masks while not eating or drinking.
Only a few tickets remain and may be purchased at Los Alamos Public Schools Credit Union at 1010 Central Ave., or online with a $4 service charge at https://tickets.holdmyticket.com.
