Letter to the Editor: UWNNM Youth Team Says THANKS!

By the United Way of Northern New Mexico Youth Team

As the United Way of Northern New Mexico (UWNNM) Youth Team’s fundraising season comes to an end, we would like to offer the community our most sincere thank you for their support.

We could not have such a successful giving campaign without the generosity of individuals and local businesses.

The third annual Taste the Sky event was a great success. Held at the Los Alamos County Airport, the Youth Team offered two options for diners, “economy class” and “first class.”

While there wasn’t a bad seat in the house, those seated in “first class” where given a little extra bang for their buck, which is sure to draw a much bigger crowd next year.

A special thanks goes to Los Alamos County and Airport Manager Peter Soderquist, The Fabulous 50’s Diner owner Charlie Bracken, Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corporation, Dr. Daniel Meyers and his Embraceable Blue Hot Air Balloon and Gillian Sutton of Flowers by Gillian.

We also want to recognize the knowledgeable and enthusiastic pilots who offered tours and plane rides as prizes for our raffle drawings.

Two new events were hosted by the UWNNM Youth Team this year.

The first, Atomic City’s Got Talent concert showcased local acts from dance groups to guitar. This event brought a rockin’ good time to Los Alamos and we would like to thank all of those who helped to make this happen.

Kudos to the staff at LAHS for the use of the Duane Smith Auditorium, assistance with lights and sound, Eric Bjorklund for his theater expertise, and to Pac-8 for covering the show.

The second of new event this year was High Tea on the Hill. This classic tea party was hosted in the Los Alamos High School Lobby.

Tea and treats were served to over 60 guests by members of the UWNNM Youth Team. Music was provided by Chip Melky as guests filled the room, and attendees were treated to a tour of the new LAHS campus.

Thank you Hot Rocks Java Café/Film Festival for providing the food, Hilltop House Hotel, Los Alamos High School staff and Gillian Sutton of Flowers by Gillian.

The Youth Team hopes to continue High Tea on the Hill next year at Los Alamos Middle School, once construction is complete (will it be done by then … if so might be a good idea, and something do to in the future as new places open?)

Finally, saving the best for last, the United Way Youth Team once again hosted Hamburger Night at the Hill Diner.

One of our most favorite events in the past, this year was no different. Guests were treated to burgers and fries, celebrity waiters and a silent auction.

This event filled the Diner with fun, positive energy and lots of generosity giving us many to thank. To Denise Lane and the Hill Diner for providing great food and friendly staff, we couldn’t have done it without you.

Also, thank you to KRSN, 1490 and the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce. Our table sponsors and celebrity waiters, Karen Easton, Los Alamos National Bank, Dr. Neal (Gumby), Morrie Pongratz, Kelly Stewart, Los Alamos County and Dr. Gene and Wendy Schmidt.

Thank you again Los Alamos for making the 2013 Youth Team a success! We look forward to seeing you next year.
