Letter To The Editor: To Bond Or Not To Bond, That Is The Question

Ralph Chapman’s letter in the Los Alamos Daily Post (link) has been the latest in a long list of well written and thoughtful letters, both pro and con, regarding the Recreation Bond vote. If nothing else, we have once again proven that Los Alamos residents are thoughtful and engaged in our civic governance. I would expect a high “voter turnout”.

I would also offer to compare the discussion up here on The Hill regarding this bond question, which has been driven by engaged residents using their own thoughts, vs. the discussion of the failed sugar tax proposal in Santa Fe that was dominated by external special interest money and a fair amount of externally canned rhetoric, much of which was as flat as a soda left on the counter overnight.

So as we vote, it really comes down to deciding if this is a good investment of our limited resources. Ralph notes that it will ultimately be residents who see the return on investment in the form of a stronger community. But as John Horne asked (link), is this the best of many choices of where to invest to create a strong and resilient community? Robert Gibson questions whether we have too many gold-plated facilities or whether we can improve our recreational opportunities more incrementally without a huge IOU (link). Perhaps.

All of these questions should be causing us to scratch our heads a little as we fill out those ballots. But in the final analysis, I am proud to say that it is a decision we will have made by ourselves, trusting our own counsel, and with a willingness to do what we think is best for this community. On that last point I think we all agree, even if we quibble on the details.
