Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Wonderful Support of Sock Hop

By JOY BEERY, Executive Director
Los Alamos Family Council

Enthusiastic dancers encouraged by ELVIS (aka Morrie Pongratz) Tim Gallegos, DJ, were the highlight of the 2013 Family Council Sock Hop.

The ticket and food sales as well as donations will support the variety of programs at the Counseling Center and the Youth Activity Centers.

Secundino Sandoval donated a $3,000 painting called “Resilience” – begun before the Los Conchas fire and completed after the evacuation.

We are reminded that those families who have gone through both fires certainly have displayed resilience in their recoveries.

Los Alamos National Bank was again a major corporate donor joined by CB Fox, Neptune & Company, Los Alamos Medical Center, Lynn Finnegan, P.A., Don Taylor Photography, LANS, and Weidlinger & Navarro.

Churches which have been supporting Family Council programs include: First United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist Church, Trinity on the Hill Church and the United Church. Other major supporters include NNM United Way and Los Alamos County.

Competitions included bubble gum blowing, hula hoop and dance contests (divided by ages.)

Door prizes were provided by several businesses: Viola’s, De Colores, Fabulous 50’s Diner, Dixie Girl, Village Arts, YMCA, Finishing Touch, LA Fitness Center, Bennett’s Fine Jewelry, Mullein Leaf Massage, Fuller Lodge Art Center, Papa Murphy’s, Film Festival, Gillian’s Flowers, Knecht Automotive and Spotted Pony Salon.

Delicious hamburgers cooked by YAC Director, Paul Martinez, assisted by Sec Sandoval, were served along with root beer floats and other goodies.

The Los Alamos High School Key Club members were great helpers in the kitchen and in keeping the popcorn bowls full on each table.

Donations of food and drinks were made by Hot Rocks Java Café, LA Smith’s Food and Drugs Center and Coca-Cola Bottling in Santa Fe.

The Family Council Board and staff are most appreciative of the support of the community.
