Thank you, Los Alamos!
I am grateful to the Los Alamos County Taxpayers. Los Alamos voters have supported the Los Alamos Public Schools for the past several decades. Tax dollars are important to the school district to maintain high quality learning environments where our students can learn and grow. School districts in New Mexico rely on tax dollars to fund necessary upgrades, renovations, and repairs to school buildings. This important funding also pays for most of the technology that our students use including the computers and software they use every day.
The General Obligation Bond (GO Bond) on the November ballot will not increase the current tax rate. This bond will allow LAPS to reach the goal of raising $30 million for “brick and mortar” projects, including completing construction at Pinon and Chamisa. The state has awarded Los Alamos Public Schools 35 million dollars in supplemental funds for construction of the schools in White Rock. We are only able to accept this money if the bond passes in November. Both schools have serious structural issues and are approaching the time that we will no longer be able to use them. Rebuilding these schools is critical. We are thankful for the New Mexico Public School Capital Outlay Council’s support and their confidence in the Los Alamos voters. This is a great opportunity to leverage state funding to meet the needs of our children. These two schools will meet a variety of community needs including providing extra gym and recreational spaces for community use.
Over the next few years, we will complete other important building upgrades around the district with taxpayer money. This includes renovations in the older parts of Los Alamos High School and Los Alamos Middle School. Tax dollars will help us install new HVAC systems in the Aspen and Mountain gyms and in unairconditioned parts of the middle school and high school. We will also fund the completion of the Barranca Mesa Elementary School playground, complete electrical and plumbing upgrades at multiple sites, and address district-wide security updates.
LAPS is committed to providing quality facilities for academic success and engagement for all students and families with your continued support. We are proud of our facilities and want to continue to have engaging learning environments that meet the needs of our community. I appreciate you taking the time to vote.
