Letter To The Editor: Teachers Emails Spammed

By ROB and KATHY HIPWOOD

As a community that places a high value on education, we urge you, regardless of your party affiliation, to vote for Stephanie Garcia Richard for House District 43. Rep. Garcia Richard has and will continue to advocate for students, schools and teachers both locally and across New Mexico. At this critical time for education, we cannot afford to lose her voice and votes.

Unfortunately, the GOP has demonstrated little support for education in our state. Teaching and learning have been devalued with an over-reliance on mandated standardized testing, hurting students statewide, but particularly those with less support at home. The GOP has imposed a school rating system that is indecipherable and a financially punitive teacher evaluation system based on obviously flawed measures and insubstantial data. The ill-placed emphasis on educational politics along with minimal to no raises, combined with cost of living increases and soaring medical expenses have left teachers with low morale and diminishing income.

Late on the evening of Oct. 3, teachers in LAPS and other school districts across the state received a spam email from the NM House GOP that was vastly inappropriate, but even more importantly, inaccurate. It portrayed Rep. Garcia Richard’s vote, as a member of the House Education Committee, on Senate Bill 10 as anti-education and anti-LAPS, yet it couldn’t have been further from the truth. As reported in the Los Alamos Daily Post on Oct. 3 (https://ladailypost.comcontent/officials-take-efforts-minimize-cuts-education-during-special-legislative-session-underway). Rep. Garcia Richard consulted with LAPS Superintendent Dr. Kurt Steinhaus and her vote reflected the best interests of LAPS and school districts throughout the state.

We have grown weary of teachers being used as political pawns and Rep. Garcia Richard is clearly the best choice for education and Los Alamos.

Sincerely,

Rob & Kathy Hipwood
