Question 1 is not about a man; it is about the people keeping their right to balance the power of those who govern them. When those in power try to convince you to diminish or eliminate an office created to protect and represent you – an office directly elected by you, you should ask why.
Currently, there is a movement across the US to diminish or eliminate the office of Sheriff. Why? There’s only one answer and it comes down to power. Because the Sheriff is elected directly by the people, it is the only arm of law enforcement directly accountable to the people. Thus, it provides a critical role in balancing, and holding accountable, the power of those who govern us.
For those who value their role in holding governing powers in check, the answer to Question 1 must be “No.” Otherwise, we are voluntarily abdicating one of the few remaining means we have to hold those powers in check.
