By NINA THAYERI would like to add my support to the discussion of the need for a White Rock thrift shop.
We here in Los Alamos County have lots of stuff and we are generous. Together with the loss of the Jemez House thrift shop and the Marie Kando effect that means that all three Los Alamos thrift shops are overwhelmed with donations.
Our mission at United Thrift Shop is to reduce the items going to our landfill while improving the lives of many New Mexicans. We do this by reselling clean clothing and reusable household goods at low prices and giving all “profits” to more than two dozen northern New Mexico non-profit charities.
Our shop provides goods to everyone at lower-than-retail prices, while helping members and community friends with a trusted place to donate items when they need to downsize or upsize or just change their living arrangements. We receive leftover goods from many estate sales each year.
A White Rock Thrift Shop would be a boon to all three shops now in Los Alamos and allow WR residents to donate and purchase with reduced travel. Each shop could spend more time researching the unique and unusual items we receive, such as original art, hand-crafted antiques, vintage clothing, books and furs and valuable jewelry.
I heartily support a White Rock thrift shop and any efforts our County Council could take to encourage one.
An overworked volunteer and United Church member.
