Many Make July 4 Event Successful

The 2013 Fourth of July Celebration at Overlook Park was an outstanding success. After the tragedy of the Las Conchas Fire in 2011 and the cancellation of the fireworks display in 2012, we all traded nervous excitement for satisfaction and wonder.

Thankfully, good rains in White Rock in the days leading to the event helped put our minds at ease. What joy we all felt to spend the day together; listening to great local bands, watching the public servants rapidly consume pie, enjoying the beautiful sunset and views of Overlook Park, and then … a truly great small town fireworks display.  America at its best!

The Celebration has a great deal of the community behind it long before the first BBQ. We would like to thank our major sponsor, Los Alamos National Bank, who has contributed to this event for over two decades. Del Norte Credit Union contributed as well and deserves our support to staying with Kiwanis these past years. Thank you to Franks Supply for donating the quiet and powerful generator that kept the Bouncy Toys going all day. We appreciate all our vendors for keeping the crowd nourished and refreshed and to Gold Water and Zia Credit Union for a substantial supply of cold water!

Special thanks got to the White Rock Hampton Inn for supplying lodging for the Tons of Fun crew. Russ Gordon organized the “Battle of the Bands” and arranged for the Nomads. The Community Winds gave us classic Independence Day music. Will Fox and company provided aerial acrobatics. The Habenaro Skydivers again showed off their considerable skill.

Of course, we couldn’t have us all together at Overlook Park without the major efforts from the Los Alamos Fire and Police departments. A special thank you goes to Fire Chief Troy Hughes who helped define the conditions for firework safety. David Archuleta and the gang from the County’s Traffic Division and the drivers from Atomic City Transit made sure that we could all get in and out. Super special thanks to the Overlook Park team: Leo Maestas and the rest of the staff from Los Alamos County Parks Division. And finally, thank you to all the dedicated Kiwanians for your time and energy. You continually demonstrate your dedication to the people of Los Alamos and the community of Northern New Mexico.

Make your plans now to be at Overlook next year. We hope for a fantastic fireworks display. But we know that’s not why we celebrate the 4th of July. We live in America – and that’s worth celebrating.
