Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Racewalk Clinic A Success!

The New Mexico Racewalkers Club hosted a racewalking clinic April 30 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

A total of 14 people attended from Los Alamos, White Rock, Albuquerque and Belen. The clinic began at 10 a.m., with a lecture, video and demonstration of the rules and technique of racewalking.

Despite a rather foreboding start to the day with a mix of snow/rain and strong winds, the skies cleared and the sun came out just in time for clinic participants to move outdoors to practice what they had learned.

This was the first clinic NM Racewalkers has led in Los Alamos in several years. It was a great success due, in large part to the support and assistance of several local organizations. We would like to thank Pauline Schneider for use of the wonderful Great Room at the Betty Ehart Senior Center; thanks also to the many Senior Center Volunteers who posted copies of the clinic flyers all around Los Alamos and White Rock.

Participation at events such as this clinic can’t rely on word of mouth alone. Mary Beth Maassen with Los Alamos Medical Center, and Phil Gursky and Barb Blair with Los Alamos Heart Council, graciously covered all advertising costs in the Los Alamos Daily Post and the Post’s March 17 print edition insert, Living Healthy in Northern New Mexico. Special thanks also go to Hope Jaramillo at the Los Alamos Daily Post for featuring an article on racewalking and our clinic in the Living Healthy insert.

Thanks also to Los Alamos community members for the warm reception of our club and clinic! See you on the trails!
