Letter To The Editor: Let’s Help Make Life Changing Differences For Our Neighbors In Need

By TROY HUGHES
UWNNM Campaign Chair

Each day I wake up and count my blessings. My health is good and I have access to great medical care if I need it. I have been able to complete three higher education degrees and will soon be starting a fourth.

Over the course of my 31-year career in public safety, I have also been able to save some funds that should allow me a comfortable retirement.

I live in a community that is not only located in one of the most beautiful parts of our great Earth, it also is blessed with great schools, low crime, great health care, great emergency services and caring and sharing people.

Not everyone in our community has experienced the wonderful blessings I have. Many are in need of our help to achieve good health, good education, and financial stability. We can make a life changing difference for those in need by giving to the United Way of Northern New Mexico (UWNNM). UWNNM covers both Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties.

A unique feature not true with most charitable organizations is that 100 percent of your donated dollar will go to those in need. All administrative costs that are normally deducted from your personal donation are covered by UWNNM Cornerstone Sponsors.

As this year’s United Way Campaign Chairperson, I have had the opportunity to visit a few agencies that directly benefit from our charitable donations to United Way. Two that I visited, Moving Arts and the YMCA Teen Center in Espanola, are filled with young people. These organizations are led by some of the most caring and compassionate people I have ever met.

These leaders aren’t becoming rich through a salary, they are rich in knowing that their efforts can and have made life changing differences for those young people they support each day. The work they do is noble, but only possible through your generous donation.

My hope is that all of you reading this letter will do some self-reflecting and consider giving this year to the UWNNM Community Action Fund. The work that is being done is making a difference, but is only possible when charitable donors give to the United Way. If you have given in the past or plan to give this year, let me personally thank you.  If you have given in the past or are considering giving this year but you are unsure of the value, let me invite you to learn more about or take a tour of some of the supported programs before you finalize your decision.

You can learn more about the supported programs or schedule a tour by contacting UWNNM Director Kristy Ortega at 505.663.3891 or visit the United Way office on the 4th floor of the Los Alamos National Bank Building, 1200 Trinity Dr.

Please join me in supporting United Way of Northern New Mexico and truly making a life changing difference for those in need.

Editor’s note: The United Way of Northern New Mexico campaign runs through December. Contribution envelopes are available at LANB, Fusion Multisport and Ruby K’s Bagel Cafe. Pledges also may be made online at unitedwaynnm.org or at the UWNNM office on the 4th floor at LANB. The LANL Employee Giving Campaign has been extended through Dec. 4. A gift to the UWNNM Community Action Fund goes directly to support neighbors in need in Northern New Mexico.
