Letter To The Editor: Know The Facts Before Speaking

Los Alamos

A recent letter writer referred to the Santayana quote “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” … (this is a more accurate quote from Wikiquote.org), but you first have to get the history right before you can apply it correctly.

Neither Stalin, nor Mao Tse Tung, nor Hitler had to disarm their respective populations before murdering them, since the citizens of these countries prior to WWII never had a significant number of guns in the first place.

Only the relatively few members of the aristocracy and the wealthy had enough money to purchase guns in Europe and Asia. The rest of the population was too busy trying to get enough food to avoid starvation. Purchasing a gun to prevent their dictator from murdering them, even if they could have found a gun, was not a realistic possibility.

So the historical analogy proposed by Mr. Antos is irrelevant.

Finally, the letter writer may have an opinion on whether or not President Obama is a Muslim and a liar with an agenda to disarm the U.S. population, but the evidence for such assertions exists only in his mind.
