The LA County’s Environmental Sustainability Board has completed its composting feasibility study and has will be recommending to the County Council to proceed in the following ways:
(1) Residents will have access to a compost drop-off site, and (2) businesses will have curbside compost pick up, much like trash, recycling, and yard waste.
A compost drop-off site for residents (as opposed to curbside pickup) will reduce the number of animals that are attracted to the decomposing waste in neighborhoods while still allowing these fruit/veggie scraps to stay out of the landfill. It may also reduce the burden of the amount of yard waste collected and processed at the Eco Station.
Decomposing food waste creates methane (CH4), a greenhouse gas 25 times more heat-trapping than CO2. We must reduce the amount of food waste we create, mainly by reducing the amount of food we throw away, and by keeping it out of the landfill.
Our community food scraps will contribute to creating beautiful soil residents can then put back into their own home gardens. I ask that our County Council please support this beautiful cycle and move forward community composting.
