Letter To The Editor: E Pluribus Unum

What does E Pluribus Unum mean to you? It is found on the Great Seal of the United States of America.

E Pluribus Unum is Latin for “out of many one”. This is the ideal of our forefathers who saw a vision of our new nation where the many came to our shores with different cultures, different ethnicities different religious and many other differences, which they would meld together to form one great nation, the United States of America.

This was to be the “melting pot”. No one culture would predominate and all would contribute from such diverse backgrounds.

This was the vision. A strong nation fueled by taking the best from each of the peoples and making a new democracy work in a freehold nation. All ideas, all skills, all strengths, and all visions to form a new unique government.

Sadly this vision is being perverted with a worship of a new religious fervor, “diversity”. It celebrate our differences, not our oneness. Diversity is an excuse to self segregate, to see ourselves as primarily different and not to be like our neighbors. This is akin to what is happening in France where many Muslim people have immigrated to France but do not want to be French citizens. They have formed enclaves that do not recognize French law and are islands of a diverse culture.

Our government seems to be possessed with a penchant to ask our race, religion, income or other. What is wrong with our country that had an ideal worth pursuing and has gone so wrong. Given that we still retain enough Americanism that we can well survive if we have E Pluribus Unum, so when we are asked to emphasize our differences just say “I am an American”.
