Letter To The Editor: Celebrating Dragonfly Playhouse Opening In White Rock

By ELLEN SPECTER
Executive Director, First Born Program of Los Alamos
LAPS School Board Vice President

I am writing this letter to celebrate the opening of White Rock’s newest early learning center, Dragonfly Playhouse. This homebased business will soon move into the building formerly occupied by Sage Cottage Montessori on Rover Boulevard.

In fact, this site has housed a daycare business for more than 50 years. Owner Lauren Lippiatt has shepherded her business through all of the county processes and met or exceeded all of the requirements. I hope there will be no needless delays, as she already has a substantial number of families waiting to get in.

As executive director of the First Born Program, I hear from families every week about the challenges of finding high quality day care especially for infants. This is a major stressor for families with two working parents. Dragonfly Playhouse will help fill that gap. First Born Families who bring their babies to her homebased day care shower praise on Ms. Lippiatt for the excellent care she provides for their little ones. One Mom shared, “It was hard to go back to work when my baby was so little, but knowing she was safe and in Lauren’s expert hands, made it easier for me to make that transition. My baby is thriving at Dragonfly.”

As a School Board member, I know firsthand that a high quality, educationally sound preschool experience sets the stage for school readiness and a successful entry into elementary school. While White Rock and Los Alamos have quite a few Montessori programs, White Rock does not have a play-based early learning center for infants through preschool for families who need full time childcare. I wholeheartedly welcome Dragonfly Playhouse to White Rock in its expanded capacity!
