Letter To The Editor: Another Deer Letter

Once again I’m very grateful to Dr. Ken Werly for a well  written composition, with bullet points, regarding the animal population in town! I wanted to add a few thoughts of my own.

I believe what makes any community special is diversity! Diversity necessitates a balance between the heart and the mind! It has been proven that both are necessary for the well-being of human beings! When out of balance and the heart is disregarded we loose our compassion and become too self-centered for the good of the whole. I believe there’s a solution to the population of deer in  town for the people who don’t appreciate the animals on their property, as well as for  the many animal lovers who want to help animals survive!

I support the idea that Los Alamos County create a food and water source for the hungry and thirsty animals feeding in town. The county can easily support this cause! Clearly we were able to financially support an elevated sidewalk between Canyon Drive and the community center that cost millions of dollars. A feeding station would cost a small fraction of the millions spent on our elevated sidewalk and would contribute much more to the happiness and satisfaction of the community.

For a much smaller cost the county could please many more people! There is adequate space for a feeding station connected to the wilderness on the southeast edge of the golf course between San Ildefonso and the greens where the deer already feed. There is also ample space behind, above and below Arizona Street! The county should provide an area to supplement the unmet needs of our animal friends. I’m sure an established food and water source would lessen the need for hungry animals, whose food and water source has been greatly diminished by fire and drought, to search every yard for their survival. A feeding site would decrease the amount of deer and predators roaming through town!

I for one hope some of the animals still come to my yard.

For the sake of the animals and people let’s have some balance in how we create our town!
