Letter To The Editor: A Responsibility And Opportunity For Los Alamos

With the recent withdrawal from the Paris agreement on climate change, cities and towns around the country are developing independent plans to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. As our community’s very existence is predicated on science, we should be among them. A very simple and effective way that we can reduce our carbon footprint would be to use a portion of the now available CIP funds to install solar panels on our larger county facilities.

The Municipal Building, White Rock library, Pajarito Cliffs site, even the Nature Center are situated so that they can easily collect some of the electricity they require using solar panels. The money invested in the installation will of course be partially, if not completely, recouped by us, the taxpayers, through the reduction of operating costs. Furthermore, utilizing more solar power would move the county closer to achieving its previously stated goal of being carbon neutral by 2040.

Finally, in the current political climate, choosing to do nothing has become a deliberate endorsement of the position that we do not need to take any action to protect the climate. I, for one, would like to see Los Alamos counted among the communities that step forward and take their responsibilities seriously. With funds already available in the Capital Projects account, we don’t have an excuse to not proceed. Please let the County Council know that you too want solar power for county facilities.
