Leonard: The 5 Things All Centenarians Have In Common

By LAURA LEONARD
Doctor of Chiropractic

I came across a YouTube video this week that featured an interview with George Jedenoff, one of the oldest skiers to ever shred the slopes of Alta in Utah.

The last video I could find was made in 2019 when he was just a mere youngster at the ripe old age of 101. This man is filled with plenty of sage advice for how he is still hitting the slopes and an inspiration to those of us who want to stay active for as long as possible.

Alas the topic for this week’s column was found following a rabbit trail of videos and articles for much longer than I care to admit. Fortunately, it also inspired me to seek out the fresh and epic powder that fell at Ski Santa Fe Monday night.

Lucky for me I happen to take Tuesdays off. In the spirit of skiing another day or doing whatever it is that inspires you to live a long life, here are the five things all living people over 100 have in common.

A community of friends and family: George is quite the celebrity at Alta and regularly skis with the silver hair crew and his grand and great grandchildren. Where there is passion for something, there are others who will share it with you.

Physical activity: Whatever kind, if it’s a daily routine and it’s outside it is going to guarantee longevity and a better quality of life. In addition to skiing, George exercises every morning for 45 minutes on the stationary bike and finishes with stretching.

An attitude of optimism: The glass is half full attitude reduces worry and creates resilience. It improves our ability to handle the ups and downs of life as they come which is crucial if you are outliving those around you.

Lots of in season fruits and vegetables, locally sourced or from the garden: Something we should all strive for. Growing a garden also equals being active and outdoors.

Quality sleep with naps included: Of course, all that time outdoors and an optimistic attitude will ensure that you get a good night sleep.

Dr. Leonard’s practice focuses on posture and performance using a combination of soft tissue release, adjustments and exercise recommendations. She also coaches patients on nutrition, self-care and body awareness so they can manage themselves in between visits. Los Alamos Chiropractic Center is in the Mary Deal Building on Trinity Drive.
