The 1971 film follows American auto racer Michael Delaney (McQueen), who’s behind the wheel of a Porsche 917 in the grueling French endurance race known as 24 Hours of Le Mans. Delaney is intent on beating his German, Ferrari-driving rival, Erich Stahler (Siegfried Rauch). But he’s haunted by memories of an accident that killed a Le Mans driver the previous year—and infatuated with that driver’s widow, Lisa Belgetti (Elga Andersen), who’s attending this year’s race. Filmed in France during the 1970 Le Mans race, Le Mans is directed by Lee H. Katzin.
