Lecture On Language Learning And The Brain June 26

ELTS News:

SANTA FE  English Language Training Solutions (ELTS) will sponsor an interactive lecture by linguist Dr. Robin Barr 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, June 26 in Santa Fe.

Language instructors, teacher educators, linguists, and language enthusiasts are invited to take part in this evening event to be held in the conference room at Garrett’s Desert Inn at 311 Old Santa Fe Trail.

“People think of spoken language mostly as a combination of consonants and vowels,” Barr said. “But psycholinguistic studies show that speaking and listening depend more on stress, rhythm, and intonation. The human brain mostly suppresses these features, presenting language teachers with the unique challenge of teaching skills that elude their own awareness.”

The evening lecture is part of Sound Awareness 2015, a three-day professional retreat for language teachers, speech therapists, and other language professionals. The evening lecture, open to the public, is an opportunity for educators to learn powerful multi-modal techniques that reveal what our brains hide from us on a daily basis and what we can do to teach language more effectively.

Dr. Barr is Linguist in Residence in the Department of Language and Foreign Studies at American University in Washington, D.C. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from Harvard with concentrations in both Indo-European and psycholinguistics.

“Dr. Barr is a captivating presenter with unique and powerful insights on this topic; come with an open mind, and you’ll leave with it unmistakably blown,” says Karen Taylor de Caballero, Director of English Language Training Solutions (ELTS), who will introduce the lecture.

The public is invited to attend this lecture at no cost. Donations will be accepted. Learn more about Sound Awareness 2015 and Dr. Barr’s evening lecture at elts.solutions/workshops
