LBGTQ+ Pride Festival And Concert June 15

COMMUNITY News:

The Los Alamos County Council presented a proclamation May 22 recognizing the second week of June as annual LBGTQ+ Pride Week. This is the first time Pride has been recognized or celebrated by the Los Alamos Community.

This year’s plans include a community Festival Friday, June 15 at Fuller Lodge and a concert at Ashley Pond sponsored by Friends of Los Alamos Pride (FLAP) featuring the Red Elvises. The entire community is invited to come out and celebrate the diversity, which makes this community so strong at these family friendly events.

Why come out and show your support? According to the 2015 New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey, “one in seven students identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or not sure. More than one in four students attempted suicide in the past year and [they] were three times more likely to be forced to have sex and two times more likely to be bullied at school,” the Proclamation states.

“We have kids here in Los Alamos who don’t want to live because of all of the hatred in the world against anyone who dares not conform,” FLAP planning member Anna Dillane said. Pride is our chance to stand up and tell them that we support them and love them just as they are! This event can actually save lives!”

This year’s Festival includes:
  • Lip Sync for Your Life, Karaoke/Drag/Dress up show – dress up, play with gender if you like and karaoke or lip sync on our catwalk. Makeup artists, hair stylists and costumes available.
  • Coming Out Door – customize a T shirt and tell the world what makes you different.
  • Over the Rainbow Bubble Challenge – see if you can get your bubble to fly over the rainbow arch of balloons.
  • Make your own PRIDE Float. Get your arts and crafts on. Floaties and Pool Noodles provided.
  • Henna Pride Tattoos, Face Paint, and PRIDE temporary tattoos for all ages.
  • Lawn games, volleyball, badminton for all ages.
  • Local LBGTQ+ resources, education and partners.
The entire community is encouraged to come out and celebrate this momentous occasion.
