This is the last call for 4-12th grader entries for the annual Los Alamos County Science and Engineering Fair. The Fair is Saturday, Jan. 25 in the Los Alamos High School Commons Area.
LAPS students, Home School students and teachers in grades K-12 will display projects in 4-5th grade individual elementary, K-6th grade elementary class, 6-8th grade junior division and 9-12th grade senior division. The public is invited to view the projects 1-3 p.m.Jan. 25.
The elementary projects are divided into three categories, Physical, Earth and Life Sciences. The students in junior and senior divisions will compete for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Honorable Mention in 17 categories. This will give them an opportunity to participate in the Northeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair in Las Vegas, NM March 8. Protocol Forms are currently available at all LAPS schools.
All 6-12th grade students are present during judging. The junior and senior division students will receive feedback from the judges, which will assess the student’s scientific approach, skills, creativity, clarity, and thoroughness. Therefore, the participation in the County Science and Engineering Fair is valuable experience for student learning. Elementary level projects grades 4-5th compete at the fair, however, are not present during judging. The K-5th grade awards ceremony 4 p.m., Jan. 25, with the 6-12th grade awards ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. – both awards ceremonies are at Smith Auditorium.
Local fair sponsors, who provide special awards, make the Los Alamos County Science Fair a memorable event. The 2013 fair saw a record breaking $12,500 in awards, donations and prizes from the Los Alamos community. The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee, The New Mexico Consortium, CB FOX, Martyn & Claire Swinhoe, Del Norte Credit Union, The Los Alamos Schools Credit Union, The LA Kiwanis, and the Los Alamos Medical Center are the 2014 t-shirt sponsors.
The generosity of these organizations ensures that all 300 students participating receive a science fair t-shirt. Los Alamos National Security, LLC and Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos Kiwanis, Navarro Inc., CB FOX and the Los Alamos Elks are corporate sponsors for the 2014 fair. There are more than 30 organizations and individual donors sponsoring the 2014 fair and more than 100 fair judges.
