The Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra (LASO) presents a free “virtual” concert of chamber music available on its own YouTube channel right now!
The program opens with two movements from J.S. Bach’s Sonata in E minor for flute and basso continuo, featuring flautist Heidi Morning.
Next comes a little-known duo for viola and cello by Ludwig van Beethoven, which the composer himself titled “Duet with Two Eyeglasses Obbligato”, played by Nelly Case and James Knudson.
Lastly, Claire Detels plays a selection of 20th century American piano works including “Ellis Island”, a work by avant-garde minimalist composer and multi-media artist Meredith Monk, a Prelude (1933) and character piece, “Woven Silver”, by William Grant Still (long known as the “Dean” of African American composers), and the third movement of Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata, titled “The Alcotts”.
To access these classical chamber works performed by members of the Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra, search for “LASO A Little Pandemic Music” on YouTube.
A second such program may be offered later this summer. The ensemble, conducted by Tjett Gerdom, looks forward to resuming full-scale performances this fall.
