LAPS: Transgender 101 Presentation For Community

Co-Director Adrien Lawyer

LAPS News:

Co-Director Adrien Lawyer of the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico will offer his presentation, Transgender 101: A Cultural Humility Training, for the community 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 in the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater.

Los Alamos Public Schools staff, parents, youth and community members are encouraged and welcome to attend.

“Did you know that transgender folks are twice as likely to experience homelessness as the general population?” Lawyer said. “We are also twice as likely to experience unemployment. For transgender people of color that goes up to a staggering four times! Transgender people experience discrimination and even physical violence on a consistent basis.”

Transgender 101 is an introduction to transgender people, their lives and challenges. The presentation covers basic terms, definitions, and concepts as well as how to begin to be a good ally to transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.

Transgender people are generally not known and understood by others, and Lawyer’s training is meant to address this lack of information and experience. Lawyer has extensive experience training professionals in schools, law enforcement, businesses and the national labs.

This presentation will mark Lawyer’s fourth visit to LAPS. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I have several transgender friends and I will use the information to help them feel safer in the world,” a student said. “It’s really nice to know the proper terminology and etiquette around transgender people.”

LAPS staff have been equally appreciative of the training and shared the following feedback:

“The training lowered my anxiety and ignorance about how to respond and interact without causing harm,” one staff member said.

Another staff member said, “I now have a clearer understanding of the terminology and struggles surrounding transgender people. I feel that my compassion toward transgender people increased and I can be an ally toward and for them.”

A community member said, “My son has a transgender female friend and I hope to use the information to ensure I am interacting with her in a respectful manner.”

This presentation is hosted by the LAPS Healthy Schools Initiative with the goals of

increasing awareness and decreasing the likelihood of bullying and discrimination against our transgender students, staff and community members.

The Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico provides support, community, and connection to transgender, gender nonconforming, nonbinary, and gender variant people and their families through advocacy, education, and direct services. More information can be found at https://www.tgrcnm.org.
