LAPS News:

Starting in the 2018-19 school year, Los Alamos Public Schools will be one of the 11 school districts in the state to receive funding for a startup New Mexico PreKindergarten program.

New Mexico PreK is a voluntary program created by the Pre-Kindergarten Act of 2005 and is jointly administered by the Public Education Department and the Children, Youth, and Families Department.

LAPS currently has public preschool programs in place at Barranca Elementary and Piñon Elementary for students with disabilities who are eligible for special education and related services.  The New Mexico PreK will be provided in addition to these programs.

There will be two additional half-day programs for 4-year-old students, one in the morning and one in afternoon, at Piñon Elementary. The program is in session for three hours per day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during the school year. Students are not in attendance Wednesdays, which are used for staff planning, training and parent meetings.

There is a maximum enrollment in each four-year-old program contingent upon state funding, so applications are part of a lottery process. There is no cost to parents for students selected to attend.

To participate in NM PreK, children must be 4 years old on or before Aug. 31, 2018. Children must reside in Los Alamos County, and for those zoned to Piñon, transportation will be available.

Instructions for Parents/Guardians:

1)  Complete the application available on the Los Alamos Public Schools website linked below and submit electronically.

2)  Applications must be received by June 15, 2018. Students selected by lottery will be notified by email after June 30th.

3)  A waiting list will be maintained.

4)  Successful applicants must complete traditional student registration by August 1, 2018. Transportation information, if applicable, will be sent by email.
