Zenas Boone bequeathed a needs-based scholarship in the memory of of his wife Dr. Irene U. Boone, a long time pediatrician in Los Alamos.

The memorial scholarship will provide financial assistance for future Los Alamos graduates to attend post high school studies. Los Alamos attorney Reid Griffith assisted in the presentation of the scholarship donation.

Principal Dr. Debbie Belew-Nyquist was among the first to learn of the generous gift to the students of Los Alamos High School.

“This was an absolutely great moment for our students and a wonderfully generous gift,” Dr. Belew-Nyquist said.

Dr. Belew-Nyquist will convene a committee to develop a scholarship application process that will be available beginning with the Class of 2015 and to graduates in future classes. The committee also will determine an annual scholarship amount as well as develop a financial strategy to issue the Irene U. Boone Memorial Scholarship for many years into the future.
