LAPS Pilot Initiative: New Safety Assurances At Events

LAPS News:

This is an invitation for comments and suggestions about a pilot safety initiative being implemented this year at Los Alamos Public Schools athletic events.

The pilot program includes a “no re-entry” practice for scheduled games at Sullivan Field, Griffith Gym, Brousseau Gym and Hawk Field. For the safety and security of students and guests, re-entry into athletic events at Los Alamos High School and Los Alamos Middle School is currently restricted.

Our increasing focus on safety is aligned with suggestions from local leaders and the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4). You may recognize this restriction from other schools in our region.

In addition to the no re-entry pilot, LAPS will continue to improve safety practices by working with Los Alamos Police and Fire Departments, employing school security, staffing games with athletic monitors, and supervising all events by school administration. In certain circumstances, bag checks will be required upon entrance.

Safety measures also include working with the New Mexico Activities Association on “Compete with Class.”  This program is designed to help improve safety and better understand the true value of interscholastic athletics and activities – to educate and prepare our youth for the future.

Based upon feedback already received, this new practice requires additional planning ahead for parents; thus, we ask for your patience, courtesy and cooperation. By minimizing potential risks, spectators can feel safer, enjoy the game, and support our student athletes. Safety is the top LAPS priority and is requiring increasing emphasis in Los Alamos and across the country.

Here are two options for providing input:

  1. Send comments by noon, Oct. 10 to safegames@laschools.net

  2. Attend a student-led Captain’s Table Safety Forum scheduled 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 in the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater (immediately following the PSAT exam); pizza, salad and water will be provided.

Your comments will be carefully reviewed and fully considered as part of improving school safety in the Los Alamos Public Schools. For questions, contact Athletic Director Ann Stewart or LAHS Principal Carter Payne at 505.663.2531.
