LAPS: First Day Of School Update

By KURT STEINHAUS
LAPS Superintendent

On the first day of school, we welcomed 3,737 students to the 2018-2019 school year for the Los Alamos Public Schools.

Enrollment is on an upward trend. We are fortunate to have a highly-qualified teacher in all classrooms. In addition, every school has at least one guidance counselor, nurse and resource specialist.

Safety University was held last week to help prepare for the start of school. Principals and staff around the district reported that they valued the time to focus on safety and talk about issues specific to their work place and student safety.

All of the eight LAPS schools have a detailed safety plan and a standard protocol for conducting threat assessments. We appreciate Police Chief Dino Sgambellone for providing School Resource Officers in our schools.

A special thanks to every staff member in the Los Alamos Public Schools. It was a real team effort to successfully launch the school year. We also appreciate our parents for helping get their children up and ready for school. And, thank you to all of our community partners who are important for student success.

Our goal this year is for every student to thrive.
