LAPS News:

The Los Alamos Middle School Science Bowl team finished in the top 24 at the 2021 National Science Bowl.

Team members include seventh grader Jasper Carpenter and eighth graders Joseph Dale, Linnhtet Htoon, Annie White and Wilson White. The team is coached by LAMS teacher Lindsey Fullop.

The team finished in 23rd place. The middle school contest featured 569 teams from all over the country.

“We were honored to represent the state of New Mexico,” Coach Fullop said. “This is the second year in a row that we have competed in the national contest virtually due to the pandemic. Hopefully, we can win the regional again next year and travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in person.”

The team made it to the national contest held virtually May 8, by garnering first place in the regional contest. The other LAMS team, Nishta Mukundan, Sofia West, John Kang, Asher Koh and Takeshi Shiina took 4th place.

“I am very proud of how well the students adjusted to the virtual format and continue to be impressed by their dedication to the team by studying and preparing for our contest,” Coach Fullop said.

The Department of Energy (DOE) created the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields.  Approximately 315,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® throughout its 30-year history, and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions.
