April 11 is National Barbershop Quartet Day. Your local Barbershop Chorus, the Lasses and Lads of Enchantment (LALOE) has an invitation for those who can carry a tune. If you have a special place in your heart for a Capella singing and four-part harmony, have we got a night for you.
Community members are invited to join the organization for guest night. The fun includes observing a regular rehearsal, and learning some songs with the chorus. The low-key gathering will allow attendees to learn some short songs by ear, and experience that rich barbershop sound from the inside out.
“Reading music is not a prerequisite, our chorus prioritizes making good music, sharing our music with the community, and fellowship,” LALOE Director Maurice Sheppard said. “We welcome men and women and we’ll help you find the right part for your voice.”
The chorus will treat guests to a couple of their favorite repertoire songs. After the singing commences, a social/refreshment time will follow, with snacks provided by the membership. Chorus members will greet new friends, answer questions and occasionally break out into off the cuff performances of quartets.
There’s no pressure to commit, just a new opportunity to showcase some fun and introduce it to potential new members.
“Singing in a choir is cheaper than therapy, healthier than drinking, and more fun than working out,” National Barbershop Quartet Day Leslie Bucklin said. “If you can listen and follow a tune, you can sing barbershop harmonies. Music is like riding a bike – as long as you know which way to peddle and can hold on for the ride, harmony will take care of the rest.”
The adventure begins at 6:45 p.m., Thursday, April 11, in Graves Hall of the United Church of Los Alamos. Additional questions can be directed to LALOE President John Baillie at 505.660.0484.
