The Hilltopper Boys and Girls Cross Country teams demonstrated why they are favorites to get onto the podium at next Saturday’s State Championship, by handily winning the District 2-4A Championship Friday, hosted by Moriarty.
The Girls scored 19 points to runner-up Taos’ 47 and Pojoaque’s 77 (low score wins), led by a 1-2 finish by Sophie Chadwick and Norissa Valdez. Lidia Appell (4th), Emma Montoya (5th), Mabel Pyle (7th), Jasmine Hornberger (8th) and Hailey McDowell (9th) achieved All-District honors.
The Boys took the first six places to achieve a perfect score of 15, well ahead of runner-up Taos’ 69 and Pojoaque’s 79. Steven Strevell, Rafael Sanchez and Wakei Hettinga finished together in the first three positions, followed by Ryan Aldaz, Keith Bridge and Gage Ellis. Reuben Goettee also achieved All-District honors with his 9th place finish.
