LAHS Track & Field Athletes Make Strong Statement March 10-11 At Fred Loya Invitational In El Paso

The Los Alamos High School (LAHS) Boys and Girls Track & Field teams made a strong statement March 10-11 in their first out-of-state meet of the season, at the Fred Loya Invitational in El Paso, Texas.

The Hilltopper Girls won the entire meet, and the Boys placed third, in competition against 27 other teams, many of them from high schools two or three times the size of LAHS.

Individual event winners for the Boys included Melaki Gutierrez, who won both the 100 and 200 m in times of 10.97 and 22.31 seconds, respectively, and Julian Singell, who won the 300 m hurdles in a time of 40.89 seconds, which qualified him for the State Championship in that event. 

Other new state qualifiers include Armando Inbody in the 3200 m (10:16.6), Grafton Urbatsch in the 400 m (50.87), and the 4×200 relay team of Kenny Suazo, Rocco Quintana, Julian Singell, and Melaki Gutierrez (1:30.4).

Individual event winners for the Girls included Jaiya Daniels, who won the triple jump with a leap of 37’ 3.5”, qualifying her for the State Championship, and Emma Montoya, who won the 3200 m in a state qualifying time of 11:52.6. Montoya also ran a state qualifying time of 2:27.3 in the 800 m. Angelina Passalaqua won the 100 m hurdles, achieving a state qualifying time of 15.98 in the prelims.

Other state qualifiers include Nyla Lee (12.62), Meredith Brown (12.89), and Allie Holland (13.04) in the 100 m, Jaiya Daniels (25.77) and Syana Sanchez (26.77) in the 200 m, Hailey McDowell in the 1600 m (5:35.2), Angelina Passalaqua (15.98) and Colette Bibeault (49.57) in the 300 m hurdles, Gianna Benelli and Passalaqua in the high jump (4’ 10”), Bibeault (10’), Siena Rolfe (9’), and Dani Trellue (9’) in the pole vault, Allie Holland in the long jump (16’ 7.5”), the 4×100 m relay team of Nyla Lee, Holland, Sanchez, and Daniels (49.52), the 4×200 m relay team of Holland, Kayli Lincoln, Sanchez, and Meredith Brown (1:45.1), and the 4×400 m relay team of Lee, Brown, Daniels, and Passalaqua (4:06.4).

Both Girls and Boys Varsity teams next compete at the Buddy Robertson Invitational in Albuquerque Saturday, March 18.
