Seventeen Los Alamos High School band students have been selected for participation or as alternates for the 2013 All State Concert Ensembles.

Some 1,000 entrants from around the state competed to perform at the all-state clinic and conference in Albuquerque Jan. 9-12, 2013.

Students selected were: Aaron Bao, Brandon Cullinan, Daniel Dahl, Eleanor Devlin Daniel Dunning, Sally Grindstaff, Kathy Lestone, Madeline Margevicius, Becky Mehlin, Alice Shao, Louisa Singleton, Breanna Sehorn, Alex Swart, Jamie Tarantello, Justine Yang, Nicholas Workman and Todd Zollinger.

According to band director Zane Meek, these students were required to perform a live audition consisting of major scales, chromatic scale, two etudes and sight reading.

Categories judged include: tone quality, intonation, range and technical accuracy in rhythm, pitch and musicality.

At the clinic, students will work with the other selected students and nationally recognized conductors and music educators for two days then perform at the University of New Mexico’s Popejoy Hall on the Saturday. There are five possible All State Ensembles for students to be placed in and LAHS will have at least one student in four of them.

“The bands, parents, and myself are very proud to have such excellent representation in what is the highest individual distinction a young musician can achieve in New Mexico,” Meek said.

In other news, the band will perform in the Winterfest parade Friday night and the band’s winter concert is slated for 7 pm. Wednesday, Dec. 12 in Duane Smith Auditorium. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
