SPORTS News:

The Los Alamos High School Girls Golf team played the challenging Ladera Golf Course Sept. 29 in Albuquerque for their second tournament of the Fall season.

The golf course doesn’t look challenging but many of the fairways are narrow, the rough can be hairy, and balls off-fairway end up in desert-like conditions. The girls were shooting for individual state qualifying scores of 97 and a team state qualifying score of 405.

Coach Pollard took six girls including three juniors Malorie Apgar (captain), Jennifer Necker and Liz Lockhart, freshman Ashlynn Glover and 8th graders Emily Moulton and Leah Mountain.

Although this was the first time several of the golfers played the Ladera course, the team strung together scores to hit the team qualifying mark of 405. This was the team’s first state qualifying leg after barely missing their qualifying target at their first tournament, the Los Alamos Invite.

Necker shot an individual qualifying score of 92 at Ladera even after being struck in the leg by an errant tee shot from another hole. This was her second individual qualifying score of the season.

After a few more days of practice, the team heads to Grants Sunday for a two-day tournament Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6.
