Los Alamos Concert Association Artistic Director Ann McLaughlin presented a talk at Tuesday’s Rotary Club meeting in the Manhattan Project Restaurant detailing the upcoming concert season.
This is LACA’s 69th season, and will feature the added attraction of a newly refurbished venue – Duane Smith Auditorium. The first phase of a multi-year upgrade of the auditorium on the campus of Los Alamos High School was completed in July. New seating, carpeting, paint and improved hall lighting will greet concert-goers at the first concert in September. Plans for future hall upgrades over the next three years include lobby redesign as well as acoustic, technical and back-stage improvements.
“The Smith Auditorium is an important community asset,” McLaughlin said. “We look forward to welcoming our audience to a fresh and attractive space that will showcase our great artists at their very best.”
LACA audiences will have their first look at the hall Sept. 28 with a performance by the Anderson and Roe Piano Duo. Millions have watched their Emmy-nominated music videos on YouTube and the press has dubbed them “the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of the keyboard” for their imaginatively choreographed performances.
November will see the return to Los Alamos of the world-renowned Salzburg Marionette Theatre, known primarily for fully staged operatic productions to recorded music. In this return engagement, the Marionettes will team with pianist Orion Weiss in performances of ballets to music by Debussy and Schumann.
Britain’s flamboyant baroque ensemble Red Priest will take the stage Jan. 9 with a performance of The Seasons by namesake Antonio Vivaldi, a priest renowned for his compositions as well as for his bright red hair.
March 15, 2015, Latin Grammy-winning string quartet, Cuarteto Latinoamericano will join forces with Daniel Binelli, composer and internationally renowned master of the bandoneón, a concertina-like instrument essential to the performance of tango. The program will feature works by Binelli and by Astor Piazolla who fused classical forms with jazz and the tango tradition of his native Argentina.
The season will close with the Ethos Percussion Group performing Rhythms of the Silk Road, an exploration of musical influences stretching from East Asia to Africa and the Mediterranean.
Pre-season ticket discounts are available by mail through Sept. 1. As in the past, all tickets are non-concert specific and may be used for any concert in the season. Students ages 6-18 are admitted to all concerts free. All performances are at Duane Smith Auditorium on the campus of Los Alamos High School at 1300 Diamond Dr. The venue is wheel chair accessible. The box office opens 45 minutes before the performance.
