SPORTS News:
Los Alamos School of Gymnastics (LASG) hosted it largest home meet of the year Saturday at 555 North Mesa Road.
The meet drew 120 participants from six teams in New Mexico and Colorado.
Established in 1976, Los Alamos School of Gymnastics became a non-profit 501c3 organization in 1984.
LASG strives to teach children, not a sport or activity. The sport of gymnastics is the key activity through which LASG coaches teach, promoting a competitive gymnastics program and gymnastics progression. There is so much more to this than teaching skills.
LASG coaches include Loui Janecky, Svetlana Skurikhin and Miles Beaux.
Janecky serves as Head Coach and celebrated her 40th year in 2021 as director of the long-running competitive gymnastics and summer sports camp programs at LASG. Scenes from past decadal celebrations showcase the warm, family environment she has created for the children of Los Alamos since her arrival in 1981. Across the decades, Janecky has nurtured hundreds of girls and boys to find significant athletic success at state- and regional-level gymnastics competitions.
Throughout her journey Janecky has played an active role forging progress in gymnastics on the national scene as well. In 2013, she was a key advocate (and one of the authors) for the creation of an alternative competition track (Xcel) within USA Gymnastics. This program is geared toward providing athletes possessing a variety of skill and commitment levels the opportunity to engage in a rewarding gymnastics experience. Many gyms that service smaller communities across the nation, like LASG does, have enthusiastically embraced this new national level program. The number of Xcel gymnasts nationally now out numbers the traditional program. Janecky became the first Regional chairperson for Xcel Region 3, which includes New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Wyoming, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, and has held that position since 2013.
