ROLLER DERBY News:
The Los Alamos Cherry Bombs are a junior roller derby team sponsored by the Los Alamos YMCA and the Los Alamos Community Foundation, who are dedicated to empowering youth both on and off the rink.
The team was recently invited to participate in the Great Salt Quake Junior Roller Derby Tournament held Feb. 3-4, 2023, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The round robin style tournament consisted of three teams: the Wasatch A*Salt (Salt Lake City, UT), the Rampaige Juniors (Temecula, CA), and our very own Cherry Bombs (Los Alamos, NM) with 3 bouts on Saturday with all B level games and 3 bouts on Sunday with all A level games. Two days of derby filled with aggressive defense, fast skating, flashy makeup, and amusing nicknames made for an incredibly fun weekend for the Cherry Bombs.
It also showed the unbelievable work the coaches have put in with the team. Their sportsmanship and teamwork shined through the whole weekend.
Coaches Caz, Bampf!, and Mama Wolf noted in an email to the team after the tournament, “We are so incredibly proud of each and every one of you. You skated your hearts out and left it all on the track, and you did so with dignity and class. For some of you, this was your first ‘real’ bout, but it sure didn’t show. You dropped bridges, listened to refs, and were right where you needed to be.”
Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams on roller skates, on an elliptical track and is one of the most rapidly growing sports in the country and the Cherry Bombs are members of the Junior Roller Derby Association.
The team has been invited to the following bouts:
- Denver – March 12, 2023;
- Taos – April 22-23, 2023;
- Colorado Springs – May 13, 2023; and
- Come see the Cherry Bombs compete at the LA Skating Rink noon to 5 p.m., May 20 against the Boulder Bottle Rockets and Arizona Junior Roller Derby
New skater enrollment begins April 1, 2023. The program is open to all youth, ages 9 to 18, at all skill levels and costs $30 per month. Practices are held 6-8 p.m., Mondays and 4-6 p.m., Thursdays April 1 to June 1, at the Los Alamos Skating Rink. From October through March, the program moves indoors and focuses on level 2-3 skaters. The Junior Roller Derby program is categorized as a “Youth Club Sport” and follows COVID Safe Practices.
