One of the top local men’s golfers in Los Alamos County is seated well following the first round of the Los Alamos City Championship.

Local veteran golfer Tim Johnson was the only competitor in the gold flight of the men’s championship division to finish under par after Saturday’s play. Johnson went 3-under, carding a 69.

The City Championship tournament continues Sunday morning at the local golf course.

Heading into Sunday’s play, Johnson will enjoy a 3-shot cushion over another veteran, Cale Jones. Jones finished even at 72, followed by three players who ended their rounds Saturday with a 75 – Thomas Herrera, Henry Poston and Sean Rau.

Jason Norman and 2016 City champion Ted Ball finished the first 18 holes with a 76.

In the women’s championship flight, KayLinda Crawford, who scored a huge victory over the rest of the field a year ago, had another big day Saturday. Crawford had an even-par 72, which was good enough for a 4-stroke edge over Tami Martinson, a multiple-time winner at the City tournament.

In third place behind Crawford and Martinson was veteran golfer Lynne Taylor, who carded a 90 Saturday.

In the senior blue division, Bruce Norman holds a 1-shot lead over Mike Lippiatt, while in the senior white division, for player 60 and older, Larry Rich and Eddie Sanchez were both even on Saturday and John Stam had a 76.

Day two of the City Championship will get going at 8 a.m.
