Jeremy Goettee, a senior at Los Alamos High School (LAHS), was recently honored as Rotary Student of the Month. Goettee is the son of Connie and Jeff Goettee and brother of Maxwell and Reuben Goettee.

The Rotary Club of Los Alamos selects one student each month of the school year to honor as a Student of the Month. This year’s recipients reflect a combination of both LAHS seniors and juniors; next year, only juniors will be recognized in hopes of inspiring their interest in Rotary programs that fall during the summer following junior year. Students are nominated by their teachers and chosen on the basis of their academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, and, in particular, their service to the community.

Goettee is a member of National Honor Society and has managed to maintain high academic standards while running on the cross country team and participating in track and field. He has competed in cross country and track for the past six years. He is a member of the high school chess team, the German Club, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Commitment to community service has created a thoughtful balance in Goettee’s life. Not only is he a member of Key Club, the high school service and leadership organization sponsored by Kiwanis International, but he also volunteers with Cookies and Conversation, the high school program that bring teenagers together with the older generation.

In keeping with his interest in cross-country running, Goettee is a volunteer for the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs, a May event that offers full and half-marathon and 50-kilometer runs.

He also serves as a teacher for the White Rock Baptist Church AWANA group, an organization that helps churches and families work together to develop spiritually strong Christian children and youth.

He is a member of the church youth group and the Anti-Bullying Club at the high school. Goettee also volunteered during Suicide Awareness Week at LAHS.

Most recently, Goettee displayed his thespian talents by tap-dancing his way across the Smith Auditorium stage as a performer in the Olions production of Thoroughly Modern Millie and received the Director’s Award for his assistance to LAHS choir director Jason Rutledge.

Goettee was joined at the Rotary awards ceremony by his mother and by high school AP chemistry teacher Kathy Boerigter, whom he chose as the most influential teacher in his life.

As a part of Rotary International, the oldest service organization in the world with more than 1.2 million members, the Rotary Club of Los Alamos gratefully acknowledges the contributions Students of the Month and their families make to our community, a principle reflected in the organization’s motto, “Service Above Self.”
