In honor of Earth Day, Jemez Sustainable Solutions in Jemez Springs, New Mexico is hosting its annual cleanup event 9 a.m. to noon, April 21, along the Jemez Mountain Scenic Byway, and invites the public to participate.
That evening at 8 p.m., the Village in cooperation with the Pajarito Astronomy Club will host the Village’s first star party in years. The day time clean up event will take place between the Trail House in Cañon, NM at mile marker nine – along the Jemez Mountain Scenic Byway – and continue past Jemez Springs to La Cueva, NM at mile marker 35.
Participants are encouraged to “adopt miles” between mile markers nine through 35, where they will be responsible for cleaning up along the highway of their choosing or as assigned. Safety vests will be required and distributed. Registration will be available at three registration stations, and liability waivers must be signed to participate. Trash bags will be provided.
Participants must bring gloves and closed toe shoes.
Registration stations include: Trail House restaurant in Cañon (miles 9-11); Jemez Stage Stop restaurant (miles 16-25) and Amanda’s Country Store in La Cueva (miles 26-35). All stations open at 9 a.m.
Filled trash bags should be stashed near the mile marker signs and will be picked up later. Participants must sign a waiver as part of their registration.
That evening the Pajarito Astronomy Club will set up a telescope behind the Jemez Springs Bath House where visitors can view the constellations beginning at 8 p.m. Pajarito Astronomy Club president Steven Becker will talk a bit about the constellations before the viewing. Free.
