Beginning today, Aug. 1, the YMCA Los Alamos Teen Center will officially welcome incoming 8th grade students as members for the first time.
The expansion of membership eligibility follows months of planning between the Teen Center and Los Alamos County with the goal of helping students build friendships, become familiar with the Teen Center before high school, and connect with positive activities and mentors at an earlier age.
“We’re excited to finally welcome our newest members,” Teen Center Director Eli Argo said. “We’ve already had the opportunity to meet many incoming 8th graders and their families through our preview events this summer, and we’re looking forward to seeing them become part of the Teen Center community.”
Membership is free for teens in grades 8-12, including students attending Los Alamos Public Schools, homeschooled and private school students, and other teens visiting or residing in Los Alamos County.
Incoming 8th graders are invited to stop by the Teen Center beginning Aug. 1 to complete a membership application, meet the staff, and start exploring everything the Teen Center has to offer. The Teen Center provides a safe, supervised environment where teens can spend time with friends, participate in arts and recreational activities, explore leadership opportunities, volunteer, and take part in special events and workshops throughout the year.
The Family YMCA Los Alamos Teen Center is at 475 20th St., Suite C, and open after school and on weekends throughout the year. Families interested in learning more about membership or upcoming programs are encouraged to visit the Teen Center or contact staff directly.
The YMCA Los Alamos Teen Center is a program of The Family YMCA and receives its operational funding through a contract with Los Alamos County. Working in partnership with local schools, organizations, and community partners, the Teen Center provides safe, supportive, and engaging opportunities for youth throughout Los Alamos County.
