SANTA FE—House Memorial 93, sponsored by Majority Whip Antonio “Moe” Maestas, D-Bernalillo, calls on Gov. Susana Martinez, Albuquerque Mayor R.J. Berry and the Bernalillo County Commission to conduct a dialogue on the possibilities of building a soccer specific stadium and bringing a Major League soccer team to New Mexico. HM 93 passed the house.

Maestas introduced HM 93 to begin the conversation here in New Mexico. It’s his dream to bring a MLS team to Albuquerque, and he truly believes the capacity and the fan base are here to support it.

“There were 10,000 fans at the first Border Clasico this past summer. With all the kids playing soccer and the love of soccer in the immigrant community, we have a strong market for soccer in New Mexico,” Maestas said.

The minor league Albuquerque Sol soccer team starts its inaugural season this spring, which drew more than 100 people to try out. Another tryout is expected this year.

In July 2013, at the University of New Mexico stadium, Club Santos Laguna vs. Colorado Rapids international friendly (exhibition game) drew 10,000 fans.
