SANTA FE ― The House of Representatives honored Rep. W. Ken Martinez, D-Grants, Feb. 15 for his years of service and dedication to the children, families and workers of New Mexico.
Speaker Martinez was first elected to New Mexico’s House of Representatives in 1998, where he served as the Majority Leader for eight years. In 2013, he was elected Speaker of the House.
While honoring Martinez, Rep. Gail Chasey said, “As Majority Leader and Speaker, everything he did was not for personal or political advantage. It was for the public good.”
“You will go on as a legacy of service,” said Rep. Georgene Louis, D-Albuquerque, during the memorial honoring Martinez.
“You have changed lives,” said House Democratic Leader Rep. Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe. “We’re all better for having known you and following your example. You are a true representative. Thank you for all your service and everything you’ve done to help us along our journeys.”
“You will go down as one of the best Speakers in New Mexico history,” said Rep.Antonio “Moe” Maestas, D-Albuquerque.
Speaker Martinez served 18 years in the New Mexico State Legislature as the representative of House Dist. 69, which includes parts of McKinley, Cibola, San Juan, Socorro, Bernalillo and Valencia counties. He looks forward to spending more time with his wife Monique, a dedicated school teacher, his children Walter, Amerika, Alejandro and Agustin and his granddaughter Soleza.
