Home Renewal Program Cycle 1 & 2 Update

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County’s Community Development Department and the Los Alamos Housing Partnership (LAHP) provided an update today on the Home Renewal Program, including close out of construction projects completed in the first cycle, and financial assistance awards being offered for those who applied and were eligible for the second cycle.

Residents who meet low-income qualifications and require financial assistance to make repairs or improvements are eligible to apply for this subsidized loan program. Homeowners are not required to make payments until the home is sold or vacated.

Cycle 1 remaining projects are anticipated to be completed by the end of September. For Cycle 2, a total of 14 applications were received by the May deadline, and nine new projects were awarded. Typical projects for Cycle 2 include plumbing, heating, and electrical repairs and upgrades; window and door replacement and insulation for energy efficiency; new front entrance steps and railings; and bathroom improvements for accessibility.

The LAHP staff is now working with the nine homeowners in Cycle 2 on a project funding plan and scope of work, and will solicit bids in early September from a pool of qualified contractors.

The Council funded the program for approximately $200,000 last fiscal year, and the FY18 budget, which began July 1 added another $200,000 to support the program.

Applications for emergency repair can be submitted throughout the year as long as program funds are available.

LAHP expects to fund one additional home renewal project using LAHP funds.
