The 7th ranked Los Alamos Hilltoppers girls soccer team lost Tuesday’s home non-conference game against rival school, 6th ranked Albuquerque Academy, by a score of 2-0.
Academy’s leading scorer, Eliza Mariner, scored in the 14th minute with a shot just inside the far post. Co-captain Anika Gorham was credited with the assist. The Chargers got their second goal in the 55th minute when Maren Baur converted a corner kick by Lindsey Herman.
Academy plays a rough and tumble game. Charger Lindsey Herman got a yellow card in the 48th minute when she collided with Topper Freshman, Katie Hopkins. Katie was down on the field for several minutes but returned to action later. Charger Kylee Taylor got called for a foul when she grabbed Topper Abby Schmalz by the shoulders while fighting for the ball.
Academy’s defensive four of Herman, Erin Pickett, Baur and Arynn Gallegos proved hard to crack despite the “Energizer Bunny” hustle of Topper forward Sienna Ahlers. In the first half Academy’s main offensive consisted on firing long through balls to Mariner, but the Topper defense led by Claire Ticknor and Jaci Linn thwarted all those attempts. Once the Chargers got the lead they relied on the “Pickett fence” led by Erin Pickett to turn back every Topper attack.
The girls travel today to Albuquerque to face Rio Rancho while the boys soccer team host the Rams at 6 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
